ALONE TOGETHER

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

A GLOBAL PANDEMIC VIDEO DIARY

A COMMUNITY CREATED FILM

We are inviting people from around the world to document their experiences on video in these challenging times. Sharing our stories can be a powerful way to heal, to remember, to process, and to be connected. We will weave your submissions together into a documentary film, support people in creating their own video diaries, and share stories via social media along the way. It will be a moving exploration of connection, care and the struggles we face in this time of isolation and global crisis. Everyone is welcome to join in, and no experience is necessary.

You can use your phone, DSLR or other camera. Remember, we want video, not stills, and please shoot landscape.

READY TO START SHOOTING? CHECK OUT OUR FULL FILMING GUIDE

If you would like to participate, please drop us an email, including where you are in the world, your current situation, and what kind of camera or phone you plan to use, to: alonetogetherglobal@gmail.com

We’ll help you create a video diary of your experiences, offering shooting tips, self-interview questions, and ideas along the way. We’ll share our knowledge as veteran documentarians, but we’ll also learn from you.

This is an unprecedented time in history, and though we are apart, we are all in this together. If this project speaks to you, please join us, and share this call out wherever you can.

QUICK START

Check out our FILMING GUIDE for in-depth suggestions, or do it your way. Here’s a simple start. As always with this project, adapt to your own circumstances and feelings right now:

  1. Shots that capture your daily life experiences in this time of crisis

  2. Two video portraits of yourself, and those you are with: one with mask, and one unmasked. Ideas: film yourself looking out the window, standing in your doorway, walking in the street, doing an activity.

  3. A brief on camera introduction - you can also interview each other if you are not alone. Who are you? Where are you? How are you doing? How is your region doing? What gives you hope? How has your life changed? What have you learned from this experience so far? What would you like to say to the world right now?

  4. An establishing shot of where you live, and the view from your window.

PLEASE: Shoot landscape (horizontal), NOT tall screen (vertical). Place your camera or phone on something if possible, to make your shot more steady.

NOTES:

Not everyone who participates will end up in the final film, but everyone will have their own diary footage as personal documentation of this unprecedented time in history.

SAFETY

Always practice the utmost safety when filming. Don’t take risks, follow your regional guidelines, and practice safe social distancing.
